Student visa — high-level guidance
The Australian student visa (subclass 500) lets you study full-time at a registered Australian institution. Below is general guidance only — the Department of Home Affairs is the final authority on visa decisions.
Issued by AVC after you accept your Letter of Offer and pay the required deposit.
You must demonstrate you are a genuine student intending to study — see GS section below.
Mandatory OSHC for the full length of your visa. We can help arrange a provider.
Evidence of funds for tuition, living costs and travel per Home Affairs guidelines.
Meet AVC's IELTS 6 (or equivalent) requirement and any visa-level English needs.
Police clearance and health examinations as requested by Home Affairs.
SOP guidelines
Your Statement of Purpose should be honest, specific and around 800–1200 words. Cover:
- • Personal background and academic history
- • Why Australia — and why this course at AVC
- • How the course connects to prior study or work
- • Career plans on returning home (or next steps)
- • Financial arrangements and family ties
- • Immigration history and any gaps in study/work
Tip: avoid copy-pasted templates; specificity is what makes an SOP credible.
Genuine Student (GS) questions
Home Affairs and AVC may ask targeted GS questions. Be prepared to respond to:
- Your current circumstances — ties to family, community and employment.
- Why you chose this course and provider.
- Why you chose to study in Australia over your home country.
- Your understanding of course content, duration and fees.
- How this qualification benefits your future career.
- Any previous study or visa applications (Australia or elsewhere).
Provide clear, consistent answers with supporting evidence where possible.

Mandatory OSHC provides GP visits, ambulance and hospital cover. Bulk-billing clinics and pharmacies are close to both campuses.
Student visa holders can generally work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study and unlimited hours on approved breaks.
